There are 3 parts to an exhaust system plus a catalyst for reducing emissions:
Exhaust Manifold
Engine exhaust gases exit the ignition chambers into the exhaust manifold
Exhaust Pipes
Connect the exhaust components together and vent combustion gases away from the vehicle
Muffler - Silencer
Reduces engine noise from the explosions as fuel is ignited; sound is absorbed and soundwaves mostly cancel out
Catalytic Convertor
Helps reduce emissions by helping to convert unburnt hydrocarbons and carbon (soot) to carbon dioxide and water vapour
The EGR valve is operated by a vacuum to open a passageway between the exhaust manifold and inlet manifold
By controlling the fuel mix and temperature the EGR valve helps reduce emissions
Part of the exhaust gas is fed back into the ignition chamber with fresh fuel and air to help produce a more complete combustion
The EGR valve helps to burn fuel more completely and efficiently
Acceleration may seem flat and idle speed may seem erratic: other things to consider include oxygen sensor, airflow meter and catalytic convertor
If you suspect the EGR valve is clogged, stuck or faulty then arrange for a repair estimate
